I can never forget the day I almost lost my life.
March 21, 2018.
It was like any other morning. I woke up at seven, got ready for work, ate breakfast with my family, and a quarter before eight I was already out the door.

After a few minutes I started feeling light-headed, dizzy, and as if what I ate for breakfast wanted to get out.
Then there was an ache on my neck and around my jaw. I was also having trouble breathing and cold sweat began coming out.
I was so confused and terrified of what was happening to my body.
I could hear cars from behind honking at me, probably noticing my faulty driving, but my mind was so muddled and disoriented that I didn’t know what to do.
The pain in my chest continued to worsen as it became harder and harder to breathe.
I knew I was going to have a car accident but felt hopeless behind the wheel.
Then I had a realization… I was going to die right here, right now.
In this car and in this work suit…
My wife and kids flashed before my eyes.
I wish I could apologize for never making it to tonight’s dinner… or any future family dinner again…
Then… blackness swallowed me.
I passed out.
The next thing I remember was waking up to the sight of the white walls of a hospital room.
My wife was sitting on a chair next to my bed, the look of terror and worry on her face.
“I thought you left us!” she said, tears streaming down her cheeks.
I said to myself, “I thought so too.” I stared at her long and hard. I just can’t believe I’m still alive.
My doctor entered the room with an anxious look on his face.
He pulled up a chair and sat next to my bed. I knew some grave news was about to be delivered.
“Listen,” he began, “you had a fatal heart attack while driving, which led to a car accident. Concerned citizens called for an ambulance and they were able to get you here just in time. One minute later you will no longer be with us right now. You are a very lucky man.”
Those words caused my entire body to go cold as if I just plummeted into an icy ocean.
I had a near-death experience, so near…
But even though this was good news, the doctor’s face was still gloomy.
He continued. “However, experiencing a heart attack is a clear sign that something’s terribly wrong here. And after we’ve run some tests, we saw that your blood pressure is high and so are your cholesterol levels. Your heart and your health are not doing well to say the least. I would recommend you take a break from work and focus on getting better.”
“How long would I have to get off work, doc?” I asked.
“As long as your body needs. I’d say a month or a couple.”
